This hearty dish features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy. Perfect for comfort food lovers, it's ideal when paired with a generous serving of mashed potatoes.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, black pepper, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly, then shape into thick, even patties.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and sliced onions, cooking until the patties are browned on both sides. Once done, transfer the patties to a plate and keep them warm.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir continuously with a fork, making sure to scrape up any browned bits left from the beef. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring, allowing the gravy to come together and thicken. Season with 1/2 tsp salt.
Reduce the heat to low and return the cooked patties to the skillet. Cover and let them simmer in the gravy for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Serve the smothered hamburger steak hot, with mashed potatoes on the side for a satisfying meal.
Notes
For a more intense flavor, you can add additional seasonings to the gravy or substitute the beef broth with a mixture of broth and wine.
