Ingredients

  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups onions thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt for gravy
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, black pepper, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly, then shape into thick, even patties.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and sliced onions, cooking until the patties are browned on both sides. Once done, transfer the patties to a plate and keep them warm.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir continuously with a fork, making sure to scrape up any browned bits left from the beef. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring, allowing the gravy to come together and thicken. Season with 1/2 tsp salt.
  • Reduce the heat to low and return the cooked patties to the skillet. Cover and let them simmer in the gravy for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Serve the smothered hamburger steak hot, with mashed potatoes on the side for a satisfying meal.

Notes

For a more intense flavor, you can add additional seasonings to the gravy or substitute the beef broth with a mixture of broth and wine.
